An arrest has been made in a case of a man who was shot while sleeping in Oakland earlier this month, authorities said last week.
Damon Roberts, 20, of Oakland, was arrested on Aug. 12 in Richmond by members of the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department with the assistance of US Marshals.
On Aug. 1, Run Hua Kuang, 33, was napping in the 1900 block of East 19th Street after coming home from work as a delivery driver. Just before 5 p.m., a bullet penetrated the wall of his apartment, through is headboard, into his head and out his left eye, according to his sister, Jasmine Kuang.
Kuang was taken to a hospital where he endured a seven-hour surgery, Jasmine.
According to the Housing Authority, Roberts was charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office with offenses related to firearms.
The Housing Authority is in charge of the investigation because it manages the apartment building.
Jasmine said her brother “immigrated to the US from Taishan, China in 2005 searching for the American Dream for his family” and is the sole provider for his wife, his 7-month-old and 3-year-old daughters and his parents.
A GoFundMe page for Kuang had reached over $365,000 raised as of Sunday.
The investigation is ongoing and the Oakland Housing Authority urges anyone with knowledge of the incident to call the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department at (510) 535-3100 or the Anonymous Tip Line at (510) 535-3155.
