Continuing land movement at Regent’s Slide on State Highway 1 in Monterey County prompted Caltrans to temporarily halt excavation work, the state agency said.
Crews noticed surface cracking at several points where bulldozers were digging out the slide, indicating additional activity, Caltrans said.
The coastal highway has been closed 45 miles south of Carmel since Feb. 9 by a slide that originated 450 feet above the roadway.
The height and steepness of the slope have made repairs difficult and required frequent adjustments to strategies for repair, Caltrans said in a Friday press release.
Caltrans has installed three sensors where surface cracking was observed to determine the magnitude, rate, direction, depth and type of movement involved. Excavation work will resume once it is safe to do so, Caltrans said.
